World Space Week 2002

The 2002 theme for World Space Week was Space and Daily Life. The activities included an international essay competition focused on the theme. The competition was organised for teenagers by the United Nations Education Scientific Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the European Space Agency (ESA). Read about the WSW 2002 highlights.

2002 International winner from South Africa

Congratulations to Carike Bosman of Eldoraigne High School in Centurion who won first prize in the international essay competition on "Space and Daily Life".

The aim of the contest was to 'encourage students from all over the world to think about how space is affecting, improving and helping them in their daily life.' During the week of the 04 to 11 October the young South African was honoured with a prestigious UNESCO award at the Manned Space flight Facilities of the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in the Netherlands.

Carike has won a monetary award of $1000, a UNESCO certificate and an air ticket to Europe (plus accommodations) to attend the award ceremony and the European World Space Week 2002 celebration in ESA/ESTEC, Noordwijk, Netherlands on 6-7 October 2002.

Her school, Eldoraigne High School, received $500 in UNESCO coupons, two sets of the Geological Map of the World at 1:50.000.000 scale (the first of its kind) and CD-ROMs on space applications (in English or in French).

Students from Algeria, Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Bhutan, Botswana, Brazil, Canada, Chile, France, India, Indonesia, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Arab Republic of Libya, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Romania, South Africa, Spain, Sri Lanka, Swaziland, Turkey, Tonga, UK, USA participated in the contest. 50% of the essayists were girls.

Ms Mariann Clarkson, the teacher at Eldoraigne High School, accompanyed her.
