SA Rocketry Camp 2006

Day 2 - Rocket launches at the Overberg Test Range

We had the rare opportunity to watch the launch of an atmospheric sounding rocket from OTB near Arniston. These rockets are designed to reach an altitude of 90km so it is quite a spectacular launch! They usually carry a scientific payload which makes measurements of the atmosphere, although our rocket had this capability disabled.

We also watched the launches of 2 rockets built by amateur rocketeers. Here they are, below, seen integrating their rockets in preparation for launch.

The afternoon was spent visiting the Test Flight Development Centre. We experienced the flight simulator and had a look at the aircraft in their hangar, where we got up close and personal with a visiting Tornado.
