SA Rocketry Camp 2006

The first ever SA Rocketry Camp was held in Bredasdorp in the Western Cape during the September school holiday to celebrate World Space Week 2006. A group of 30 participants comprised learners and students from COSAT school in Mitchell's Plein, the Cape Academy in Constantia, Hermanus and Bredasdorp High Schools, the University of Cape Town, the Hermanus Magnetic Observatory and the University of KZN.

The programme ran over 3 full days and a great time was had by all!

Day 1 - Cobra rockets

Participants built and flew their own Cobra rockets at the Bredasdorp Sports Grounds.

Day 2 - Larger rocket launches

We witnessed the launch of an "atmospheric sounding rocket", as well as 2 large amateur rockets, at the Overberg Test Range near Arniston. We also visited the adjacent Test Flight & Development Centre.

We visted the facilities at the Institute for Software and Satellite Applications at Grabouw, and saw the Sumbandila satellite in the testing phase.
